Recording Our Thoughts

 Instructor Kecia Deveney

Join mixed media, jewelry artist and avid recycler of vintage items, Kecia Deveney, of Lemoncholy’s Studio as we create our own art journals using fabric and deli paper. We will learn ways to create backgrounds for our pages using many different techniques such as stenciling with with products we all have on hand, collaging, hand painting and more. We will also discuss how to begin the process of starting a journal page (the hardest part!) We will be working backwards to complete our sewn journal first and then decorating a few pages. Finally we will finish up by writing on a page. You will leave with a finish journal and the know-how to continue the process once you go home.

We will be doing a little bit of sewing in the beginning, but you do not know how to sew to do this part (it’s just straight stitching back and forth).

What is an art journal anyway?

Well, the professional definition would be something like this (found online) -”artist's journals are illustrated diaries and journals on any theme. An art journal can be a record of your daily thoughts, a travel journal, an exercise or diet diary, a dream journal, a place where you jot down your goals or to-do lists, or... well, almost any record that you'd like to keep in a book or notebook.” However, I just want to tell you that an art journal is anything you want it to be. There aren’t many rules, there doesn’t have to be a theme (themes are kind of limiting, aren’t they?) And you don’t have to even write in it if you don’t want to!

I started an art journal for a few reasons. One, I am very limited on wall space. Not much more room to hang anything! Two, I’ve got a drawer full of scrapbooking papers, torn out magazine images (we will call these “collage potential images”), collage papers, old art work, old book pages, tons of random paper items given to me by friends or bought at art stores while taking classes. Three, I’ve got tons of paints, stencils, sprays, water colors markers, glue, scraps, buttons, inks, vintage magazines and more! Let’s put it this way, I have supplies up the ying yang and I need to start using them!
